2025 Statistical methods in Medical Physics

The course is aimed at advanced tasks connected with the use of statistical methods in data handling and interpretation. It covers the methods of inferential statistics most frequently used in the medical field, and the treatment of errors in surveys and uncertainties in radiation protection. The focus is on worked examples

This e-learning event was accredited by EBAMP (European Board of Accreditation for Medical Physics) with 28 CPD credits and is intended for practicing clinical Medical Physicists who are involved in data management and research. 

Content

• - Experiment design: Hypothesis testing, Sample Size determination for different study designs.
• - Reproducibility of different observers; Agreement between two methods of clinical measurement.
• - Evaluation of a diagnostic test– Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, ROC methods.
• - Applied regression analysis. Analysis of variance, Analysis of Covariance, multiple regression, logistic regression.
• - Survival analysis – Relative risk, odds ratio. Survival curves with Kaplan Meyer; Log-rank test; Cox models.
• - Biases and errors in surveys.
• - Uncertainty in radiation protection.

 Course structure

The course is structured in 13 hours of video-lectures, selected from those given live during the 3 ESMPEs on Statistics held in Prague and Athens. You can watch and listen to each video as many times as you like. Before each lecture there is a list of “learning objectives”, which you must demonstrate that you have assimilated in order to obtain the CPDs.

 Tutorship and Forum

A discussion forum and an online tutor are available to participants, who can post questions in the forum for everyone or specifically for the tutor, Dr Marco Brambilla, the scientific chair, who is available to answer any doubts or questions. Give him maybe a few days, but he will definitely answer you.

 Final exam

The final exam is mandatory. CPDs credits are obtained by passing the final multiple-choice exam, which will be presented to you when you have attended the entire 13-hour video lectures package. Questions and answers are randomized. The exam has a minimum score of 75%, you can retake it 3 consecutive times, but if you fail you have to retake the course. You then have 2 more attempts to pass the exam.
